The traditional masks of Mexico and Guatemala are some of the most wonderful and inexpensive collecting areas of ethnographic art. With a cast of characters ranging from heroes and villains to saints and animals, the variety of subjects - some beautiful, some horrific - is beyond comprehension.
This mask probably represents a Rustico, which is a sort of “wild man.” It could also be a viejo, or old man, with his long beard of yucca fibers. The mask probably dates to the 1960s or 1970s and shows clear indications of being danced. Now Seekers, these masks are affordable. Let me know if you want one or more to decorate your abode. -Lonesome
