Dig It - 3/30/23
This Female Eskimo Doll is 16” tall and dates to the Late 19th or Early 20th Century. Her parka is incredibly detailed and made up of a number of different furs. She has a beautiful, sweet face carved from Caribou antler, and is by far one of the Greatest Eskimo Dolls I have come across. And yes, she is for sale.
Eskimos remind me of my own Arctic-like adventures in my youth. Like the great explorers Scott and Perry, I would load up my Toboggan with supplies. Accompanied by my good friend and fellow explorer, Joe Shelby, and my German Short Hair Pointer, Marlena, we would forge out on to Canoe Brook Golf Course for a day of tobogganing and exploration. We knew all the names of the Peaks on the western slope of the Mighty Watchung Mountains. There was Half Fly and Bumpy, Cliff Hill, Big and Little Suicide - all majestic slopes for sleds or toboggans Like the Eskimo, we had many names for the types of snow and knew which ones were the fastest for sledding. We carried a little gas burner and would melt snow and add dried Lipton chicken noodle soup for lunch. It was always best to make camp under a Weeping Willow cause the ground was drier. God, it could be cold out there, dragging that toboggan around, but one could easily get lost in the Spirit of Adventure. What was probably 180 acres seemed as big as the Arctic circle back then.
Well, Fellow Seekers that about wraps it up, I’m going to mush on out of here.
