Dig It - 5/23/22
Well Fellow Seekers, this is a late 19th century Navajo silver headstall - for a horse, of course! It shows the great value Navajos placed on their horses. Altogether, I’m sure there is probably at least a pound of silver there, though that is just a guess. The piece is so pure with the complex conchas/os on the sides and the brow band with the undulating sinewy feather/leaf designs, the three mountain triangular elements and the cross. The stamped design is a classic example of the Navajo concept of beauty, or “Hozo” meaning harmony and balance. This headstall was collected by an Anthropologist in the early 20th century.
