Dig It - 5/19/22

Hey Fellow Seekers, You know that old saying, “Walk A Mile In My Moccasins”?

Well, in this case, to do that you would have to be Cheyenne, and the year would have to be between 1860 and 1880.

We know that because the style of beadwork and the colors used are pure Cheyenne. We know the date because the foundation of these moccasins is buffalo hide, and buffalo were virtually extinct on the southern plains by 1880.

This was a time of tremendous upheaval and turmoil amongst the Native Americans on the Plains. Their main source of food the buffalo were disappearing and encroachment EuroAmericans was rapidly expanding. Additionally, United States troops, who had been engaged in the Civil War, were being redirected westward in the name of Manifest Destiny. I think the book and the movie, “Little Big Man” pretty accurately captures some of the spirit and flavor of the times when these moccasins were made and worn.
