Dig It - 10/8/26
I left Morning Star Gallery (MSG) in 1989 and went out on my own. I knew a lot about the material but not much about business. By that point, I knew most of the guys dealing in jewelry, and for the first two years, my major competition was doing time, so I was getting most of the great pieces in Santa Fe. This bracelet came from the late, great Bob Ward, another ex-MSG alumnus. I remember it was $900, which was a fortune back then, and a big investment for an undercapitalized dealer, but hell, it was great!
Bob had called me to say he had two great bracelets. Now, I knew that Bob knew what he was talking about, so I met him, and when he told me the price for the two, I was in shock. I think my hand was shaking so much I had a hard time writing that check! But when you see the best pieces, you do what you've got to do to get them! I will say that the only Greats I ever regret are the ones where I did not write the check.
So Fellow Seekers, that is my experience and my advice. I do believe in fiscal responsibility, and there are times when it is just not in the budget. But even if you have to stretch and it hurts a bit, when you see something Great, write the check. I ain’t cheap, but I try and sell the Best. -Lonesome
