Dig It - 9/14/23

Hello fellow seekers. Today we are going to look at beautiful, late 19th century Intermountain or Eastern Plateau parfleche. This piece was sold by a shop on Madison Avenue in New York City, where I worked for a few years after Graduate School at N.Y.U.

New York was a wild place back in the 1980s, I don’t think the Youngins will ever understand how dangerous and crazy it was back then. But it was cheap and Museums and Shops did not pay much.

Anyway, this was primarily a Quilt and Folk Art store that wanted to expand into Native American Art and guess who they hired as the Resident Indian Art Expert, Cook, Packer and Shipper. If you have not guessed, it was me. I got to meet, or more accurately see, all sorts of famous people who came into the shop. I remember trying to sell Bruce Springsteen a Navajo Yei rug. He was very nice and listened to my spiel, but did not buy the rug. The shop owners did have a great eye, as reflected in this beautiful parfleche. It is for sale and can be yours.

Just one quick note Old Lonesome much prefers the Vast Open Spaces to the City. Adios!
