All right now, simmer down Fellow Seekers. Today, I’ma gonna show you one of the Greatest Native Dolls that was ever made. This here Apache doll dates to the Late 19th Century and was owned by the famous English Socialite and Actress, Lillie Langtry, 1853-1929. Now, Miss Lillie was the mistress of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward the VII. Her most fervent American Admirer was none other than Judge Roy Bean - the Law West of the Pecos. That horny, murders judge named his town Langtry and his bar, “The Jersey Lilly,” complete with a picture of her behind the bar. Could he have sent this doll to Lillie as gift? Who knows, I weren’t there.
Regardless of all that great History, this doll is a masterpiece! 22.5” tall - that is Big! She is wearing her special regalia for the coming of age ceremony, The Sunrise Dance. This includes a beaded, fringed hide poncho, beaded hide skirt with tin cones, and beaded hide “Cactus Kicker” moccasins. Her hair is pulled back into a bun.
