Dig It - 8/17/23

Well Fellow Seekers, this past November, November 26th, 2022, to be precise, was the 100th Anniversary of the opening of Tutankhamen’s tomb. The vast and beautiful contents of the tomb Amazed and Captured the Worlds attention. The World went crazy for all things Egyptian, Egyptomania!

This enameled buckle was inspired by some of the great jewelry that came out of the tomb. The shape of the buckle represents an Egyptian shrine, inside are two affronting Falcons representing Horus, the Sun god and the god of Divine Rulership. Horus wears the Double Crown of the united Upper and Lower Egypt. On Horus’s back are Cobras and the Ankh, the symbol of Eternal Life. Behind the images of Horus are two red and blue discs, which I believe represent the sun. At the center of the buckle is another sun symbol with a Scarab Beetle below. The Scarab Beetle rolls the sun across the sky.

This buckle was made in England in the 1920s and is enamel on silver. The original Egyptian jewelry would have been inlayed with Turquoise, Lapis and Carnelian. The world went crazy for all things Egyptian in the 1920s and it is still Crazy one hundred years later.
