Dig It - 11/6/23
Dig this Fellow Seekers! I bought this work bag this summer. When I saw it I was Blown Away! It was not quite like anything I had ever seen before. It is 16” across and 11” high. The foundation is smoked buffalo hide. Smoked hides are a northern tradition, starting with the Blackfeet and running up north to the Cree and Athabaskans. The red vertical panels are made from red stroud, and this is the earlier blue-red stroud not the later, orange-red stroud. The three central beaded panels with the red and yellow diamond shaped feathers and the concentric squares give this work a bold, static geometric look; while the slanting rows of beadwork on the stroud give the work movement and energy. I have not given the piece a tribal designation yet so if one of you seekers wants to weigh in I’d be much obliged. Watch your Top Knot. -Lonesome
