Dig It - 8/11/22
Harold J. Evetts and his partner Robert Vandenberg, affectionately known as The Bob & Jay Show have bought, and sold tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of bracelets over their years in business. Sadly, Jay passed away several years back. I bought this piece from his estate.
In 40+ years of doing business and the countless number of bracelets bought and sold, this piece and one other were the only two he kept and wore. What was it that made this bracelet so special to him? I have asked myself that question many times over the 6 years I have owned it.
For me, one of the things that make this one special is its quirkiness. At first glance, the bracelet and the placement of the stones look balanced and symmetrical, but that is far from the case. On closer inspection you see the variety of shapes that flank the center oval stone. On one side they are triangle, round, and trapezoid stones. On the other side they are oval, trapezoid, and trapezoid stones. Maybe it is the dyslectic in me, but somehow it works.
Looking further, the stones themselves are quite beautiful and are a more intense, luminous blue than in this photo. The next thing I noticed is the beautiful and simple, yet bold handmade bezels that give each stone a sort of confidence and presence. Last, but not least, is the hand-drawn wire foundation which gives the bracelet a solid look. Unfortunately, I did not get the chance to ask Jay what it was that drew him to keep and wear this piece, but I am honored to have had the chance to own and appreciate it.
The bracelet is about 5.5” from terminal to terminal on the inside with a 1.25” gap between the terminals.
