Some say Kiowa. Some say Comanche, even Lipan Apache. Well Fellow Seekers, I am going to say Comanche today. This buffalo hide parfleche cylinder dates to the 1850s, maybe even a little earlier. The designs are both bold and delicate. The pigments are still bright under a sort of shellac made from boiled peach pits (personal communication with Gaylord Torrence). There is something very Deco about the bottom designs and something sort of Dr. Seuss about the upper designs ending in those fan-like splays. What does it all mean? I really don’t have a clue. This time I will leave it up to you, my Fellow Seekers. Let me know your thoughts or theories. Signing off, Lonesome.
