Dig It - 12/19/22

Well Hello Fellow Seekers! Today we have a Mystery of Cosmic proportions, the Mystery of the Back Sun. Cue organ music Dadummmmm. The object we are investigating is an early Woodland, probably one of the Great Lakes Tribes, two sided, hide covered drum. I am obsessed and fascinated by the images painted on the hide covers and what the artist might have meant by these images.

Side one: "The Black Sun”. What is going on? Even a child draws a yellow sun. Well Seekers, here is my take on it. The artist has drawn a black ground line, a black encircled sky with black dashes falling from it. Remember the early Rolling Stones song “Paint It Black?” Well, that is just what the artist did. In the center are two vibrant painted Wigwams, one orange, one red, both with doors open. Maybe night and day have reversed and interchanged with each other. Or wait for it, perhaps The Black Sun represents a Super Nova and the Black Hole to follow? Perhaps the best explanation is the Black Sun represents a Solar Eclipse. I truly don’t know the answer, but I love the Mystery.

Side two: Same wigwams/tipis. Same black foreground. But now we have a yellow encircled sky, though with the same black dashes, and we have three red spheres. What are they, a Red Moon or the Red Planet Mars? My take is that this is a Red Moon and the fact that there are three of them represents Time passing (little reverb sound effects please), a time lapse of the Red Moon's passage across the sky.

Fellow Seeker, my interpretations are probably horseshit, but I can tell you that these covers were most likely painted by a Shaman, and this was his personal Vision -a vision just pulsating with Cosmic energy. If you are into Shamanic Art, this drum may be for you. Seek Out!
