At the end of the 19th century, the Pueblo potters of Acoma made some of the finest pottery in their thousand year history of ceramic production. Ollas like this example have paper thin walls and precise, thin line decoration.
At this time, Acoma was just beginning to produce pottery for non-Native consumption such as Anthropologists collecting for museums and tourists traveling the Santa Fe Railroad looking for souvenirs. It would appear that the extra outside demand for Native pottery led to a renaissance in Acoma ceramics wares, producing absolutely stunning works of art such as this.
